Quis Custodiet Custodiam - Who Is Watching The Watcher (2007)

Menno Aden transfers “filmstills” of closed circuit television onto canvas. The original images, randomly selected hidden camera footage, show short moments of other people’s lives and we participate as voyeurs. Through technology, people are shown as anonymous faceless beings, and their actions can barely be unlocked. The paintings retain the characteristics of the photographs that are their source. Their cropping, unfocused lines, and faded grey color convey the memory of a past event and suggest a sense of loss.
